Be a Patron!

workshopPatreon is an amazing way for people to earn their livings as independent artists.

For hundreds of years artists have thrived on the patronage of their communities and Patreon is a modern day continuation of that integral process. Patreon.com is a website for artists to achieve their goals through gaining and maintaining a regular monthly income with micro donations.

For my work, this means that you, my wonderful patron, give a donation, however small, even as little as $1 a month (it seriously all helps!) and as a thank you I make a piece of jewelry for you. Dependable monthly income is vital to artists who work to make a living off of their work and Patreon is a great platform to make that happen.

It is also a way to get handmade jewelry for less.

Since like any artist, I covet the idea of dependable income, you can get my work for less through being a patron than through Etsy or commissioning a piece. For example, take these adorable whale earrings:

Whale Stud Earrings 1

They’re cute, handmade and hand engraved, all sterling silver stud earrings. You can get them on Etsy for $30. You can get them directly through me for the same price. My patrons got them for $27 and free shipping.

How?

My patrons at the $9 a month level get a different pair of earrings at the beginning of every season. That means every every December, March, June and September (as long as you have already been a patron for at least three months) a new pair of earrings is delivered to your door for as long as you are a patron. So every three months you get a pair of earrings worth $30 or more for only $27.

Past Patreon Gifts

The earrings are from the $9 a month level, the mala bracelets are from the $13 a month level. Each are sent out every three months.

A Few Other Bonuses

A few other bonuses (besides the beautiful jewelry delivered to your door) come with every level of patronage. Joining at any amount gives you:

mandala-sketches

  • First access to my sketches and works in progress
  • A look at my new work before I put it up for sale in my Etsy shop
  • Behind the scenes photos and info you won’t find on my Facebook or Instagram
  • And you will never pay full price for my work again! Get a 5% off coupon code to use every time you buy something in my Etsy shop. Forever. Plus go on my personal patrons list and get 5% off your purchases when you order directly through me.

So you know, it’s kind of cool.

So Many Options!

You can pick any amount to donate on a monthly basis. But there are eleven different gift levels. For the moment they are either Seasonal, where you get a gift every three months, or monthly, where a piece of jewelry is sent to you every single month. The amounts range from $1 to $135.

Here’s the breakdown

$1 or more per month (Every level above this also gets these benefits!)

  •  First access to my sketches and works in progress
  • A look at my new work before I put it up for sale in my Etsy shop

Branch Handfasting Rings

These rings were so much fun to make! I made them for an amazing couple’s handfasting recently. The stones are citrine (yellow, his birthstone) and peridot (green, her birthstone). They decided to swap the stones so that she would wear his birthstone and he would wear her birthstone. What a beautiful idea! They wanted them to both be branch-style rings but she wanted hers to be a bit more delicate and his needed to be a bit heavier looking.

Branch Wedding Ring Citrine 1

I fabricated the branches, sawing, shaping and soldering wire, then carved out all the texture all over both rings. The settings are actually my first handmade prong settings! There was a little bit of sweat and a few failed attempts but in the end they worked out perfectly and I was super pleased! There are definitely more prong settings in my future!

Branch Wedding Ring Citrine 2

Once the rings were done I used a patina to darken the peridot ring and bright polished the citrine ring, set the stones and watched them sparkle! Because, at least part of the reason I’m a jewelry artist is because of the shiny things in life.

Branch Wedding Ring Peridot 1

Branch Wedding Ring Peridot 2

I’m so glad they like their rings. And I’m starting to really get into this branch ring style. Now I want to make more!

5 New Listings in my Etsy Shop

I’ve been working hard at updating my Etsy Shop lately! There are so many new things to check out including a couple new rings, a new one of a kind wrap mala bracelet and the all new custom gemstone pendant settings where you choose your setting and your stones!

Honey Drop Ring

Sterling silver, citrine
$40

Confession: I sometimes eat honey by the spoonful. These little 3mm citrine cabochons I got in look exactly like perfect little drops of honey. So when my best friend mentioned making a tiny hexagonal setting for one of them I couldn’t resist! This is the result. A delicate little drop of honey in a wonderfully matched sterling silver ring.

Flower and Vines Setting

Sterling silver, and your choice of bloodstone, bumblebee jasper, pink opal, agate or aventurine
Prices start at $170

I love love love doing custom work. By its nature, jewelry is extraordinarily personal. Because of the intimacy of jewelry I think people should be able to determine exactly what they want to put on their bodies. To make that easier I have now added custom gemstone pendants to my Etsy Shop. You pick the setting (two are available at the moment, this is the first) and one of my carefully selected stones. Then I make a one of a kind pendant necklace just for you. Beautiful!

Cathedral Setting

Sterling silver and your choice of azurite, aventurine, bloodstone or bumblebee jasper
Prices start at $155

So I have a thing for Gothic churches with their flying buttresses, heavy architecture and light stained glass. That imagery is where this custom gemstone pendant necklace began. Just like the Flower and Vines Setting you choose the stone you like best. With either of the custome gemstone settings, if you want a stone you don’t see listed, just tell me and I will find you something perfect!

Simple Sterling Silver Ring

Sterling silver
$15

I made this ring as a short break while working on a couple commissions (Yes, I take breaks from jewelry to make jewelry, haha!) and I have worn it every day since. A lot of the jewelry I wear has a meaning to me. This unassuming silver circle was made as a reminder that my life is whole, filled with everything I could ever want or need, all I have to do is look and remember. It is, of course, also a nice piece of accent jewelry worn alone or stacked with other rings.

Compassion Surmounts All Obstacles Wrap Mala

Sterling silver, amazonite, tree agate, rhodonite, crazy horse stone
$130

The Hindu elephant god Ganesha is known as the Destroyer of Obstacles and has always been a favorite of mine. The lotus is a symbol of compassion. Compassion can get us through an awful lot of obstacles whether it compassion towards ourselves and what we perceive as our shortcomings or towards others. With that idea, I made this one of a kind wrist mala. All the stones are natural and all the sterling silver parts are hand made.

I hope you enjoyed this list of my new pretty things! Which one is your favorite?

One of a Kind Engagement and Wedding Ring Set

Recently I had the honor of making a unique engagement and wedding ring set for one of my friends. As it was the first wedding ring set I have been asked to do I was nervous! Wedding rings and engagement rings are special. They are worn much longer than most jewelry and are chosen by the couple to represent their love for one another. Making something worthy of such value is a daunting task. But a task to which I was excited to give my best effort.

My client found the main stone herself, a gorgeous quartz with dumortierite inclusions and I found some teeny tiny pear-shaped malachites that would work as leaves. I was asked make it look like branches and to have the wedding ring wrap around the engagement ring – an idea I absolutely love!

After making several sketches (as I said, I was nervous!) I started to compose the ring’s shape.

After that it was time for the challenge of making the the sterling silver look like bark. After trying a few different tools and textures I settled on some rotary tool carving as the best way to get a deep, organic, texture.

From there it was the challenge of fitting the wedding ring around the engagement ring and placing the branches. The best technique I found for placing the branches was trying on the rings and drawing on my fingers (so professional!).

Next I placed the stones, made three mini bezel settings, carved the ring and set the stones, checking numerous times to make sure the fit was still good.

When both rings were finished there was a satisfying snap when they fit together like a puzzle. What a beautiful idea for a wedding and engagement ring set! I was so happy to hand these rings off and better yet, my friends are happy with them, too. Now I get to look forward to making the groom’s wedding band!
