Since I was out of high school I wanted to be both an artist and a yoga teacher. Art has been an important part of my life since my parents gave me a box of crayons. Making things is part of how I connect with the world. And my yoga practice is part of how I connect with my self.
My passion for yoga started some time in high school. My mom brought me with her to a class after some reading said it could help with anxiety. I loved how it got me moving. And, as I was only seventeen, I loved how I could play with the limits of my flexibility and balance. The more regularly I practiced the more I found that yoga could help with my anxiety, depression and even to some extent my panic attacks.
The training I chose was Ashaya Yoga, taught by its founder, Todd Norian. It started in April and included physical practices, safety, teaching techniques, philosophy, meditation, mantra and breathing practices. There was homework, tests and hours and hours of reading. At times it was physically, mentally and emotionally challenging. My fellow students, the assistants and the teacher were all kind, authentic and amazing in their passion and ability to support everyone else in the training. It was an experience for which I will always be grateful.
I believe the physical practice of yoga, breathing techniques and meditation not only heal my body but also aid me in finding calm and joy in my life. It is my hope that sharing my experiences, both triumphant and difficult, will give others tools to find their own paths to a brighter life.
