Halloween Yoga

I Am an Artist Yogini

Since I was out of high school I wanted to be both an artist and a yoga teacher. Art has been an important part of my life since my parents gave me a box of crayons. Making things is part of how I connect with the world. And my yoga practice is part of how I connect with my self.

My passion for yoga started some time in high school. My mom brought me with her to a class after some reading said it could help with anxiety. I loved how it got me moving. And, as I was only seventeen, I loved how I could play with the limits of my flexibility and balance. The more regularly I practiced the more I found that yoga could help with my anxiety, depression and even to some extent my panic attacks.

The training I chose was Ashaya Yoga, taught by its founder, Todd Norian. It started in April and included physical practices, safety, teaching techniques, philosophy, meditation, mantra and breathing practices. There was homework, tests and hours and hours of reading. At times it was physically, mentally and emotionally challenging. My fellow students, the assistants and the teacher were all kind, authentic and amazing in their passion and ability to support everyone else in the training. It was an experience for which I will always be grateful.

I believe the physical practice of yoga, breathing techniques and meditation not only heal my body but also aid me in finding calm and joy in my life. It is my hope that sharing my experiences, both triumphant and difficult, will give others tools to find their own paths to a brighter life.

As of October fourteenth I am a certified and registered yoga teacher and I could not be more excited! Starting November 20th I will be teaching a half hour Lunch Break Yoga and Breath class at Still Waters Yoga in their new location near Arrowhead Park in Maumee.

I will also start a weekly yoga class at Dancer’s Pointe on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-8:15pm. To kick it off I am offering a free Halloween inspired yoga class on Tuesday, October 30th at 7:30pm. If you want to try out my yoga class and enjoy some pre-Halloween fun, take a look and sign up!

Meanwhile, I am still making jewelry, too!

New Narwhal Jewelry!

I have been making a lot of new jewelry lately – which has been fantastic fun! A recent mini obsession was with narwhals. Yes. Those awkward looking sea creatures with the giant tusk sticking out of their heads. A patron asked for a custom narwhal pendant for her daughter. And – confession – when someone asks for flora or fauna I don’t know much about I scour the internet for information on it. Curiosity must be sated.

So I made this pendant and learned that the narwhal tusk is actually a single tooth that grows out of their lip and spirals the the left. Always to the left. And unlike most other animal teeth, the tusk is built inside out. Most teeth have enamel and other hard materials on the outside to protect a squishy, sensitive, nerve infested inside. Narwhals aren’t afraid of letting their sensitive side show. Their soft sensitive nerves are on the outside of the tusk with the hard materials supporting the structure on the inside. So they probably don’t use their tusks to break ice or fight because it would be like hitting an exposed nerve! Ouch!

In fact, there’s a lot about narwhals we don’t know – and I love mysteries! If you’re curiosity is piqued here is the main article I perused:

But I had so much fun with the narwhal pendant I decided to add them to the ever growing Creature Collection.

I want to take a moment to thank you all for your support in following my posts and checking out my jewelry and of course, purchasing some of it, too. It’s no fun being an artist with no community to share my work with. Thank you!

Soon I’ll tell you more about those bangle bracelets I’ve been hammering out!

Have a beautiful day!
