Live Virtual Yoga Classes

Right now with COVID-19, live virtual classes are the best way to still meet with students and have a much needed sense of community. To help keep us all sane (myself included) I am offering weekly beginner and intermediate classes. Because many people are experiencing financial difficulties at this time all live virtual group classes are ‘Pay what you can.’ This means you pay anywhere between $1-$20 for an hour class. Whatever works best within your budget.

Current Schedule

(For the next two weeks because this is a fly by the seat of our pants kind of time)

Tuesdays
Beginner yoga 9-10am

Wednesdays
Intermediate yoga 9-10am

Thursdays
Level 1-2: Flowing into Alignment 9-10:15am (moving to 5:30-6:45pm after the lockdown is over)
Register for Thursday’s class through Still Water’s Yoga.

Sunday 4/5/20
Yoga to soothe anxiety 12:30-1:30pm

“Live virtual yoga class,” what does that even look like??

It’s pretty simple. I set up a Zoom video meeting for the yoga class. When you register an email is sent to you with a link to join the class. A few minutes (like 15 or so to work out the tech kinks) before class starts you click the link in the email and BOOM, you’re in the zoom meeting/yoga class! The class itself runs like a normal (for my classes :P) yoga class. We’re just all in different places. As a bonus (especially for introvert-days) you can leave your camera off and no one will even see you. You can leave your audio off too and basically become a yoga ghost. I get it. I have those days too. 🙂

For more specifics and technical things check out the FAQ or send me a message with questions. This is all pretty new to me too, so we can figure it out together.

A look behind the camera

New opportunities

So many new experiences, new schedules, new uncertainties have been thrown at us. But I believe we are resilient. Embracing change, even temporarily, is an evolving practice. I hope I see you in these virtual classes so we can catch up and reconnect. Even if you have never taken a yoga class from me I hope to see you in my virtual classes. This can also be a great opportunity to try a yoga class and see what you think of it!

Are there any class types or days/times you would like to see on the virtual schedule? Let me know and it will probably get scheduled. I went down from ten classes a week to three, so there’s room to add more!

Until the next practice take care of yourself, wash your hands, and tell your people you love them!

Grateful for Gratitude

I was never interested in a gratitude practice. I love to write stories, even essays are fun. (I am a proud nerd.) But writing in a journal has always been something I would pick up for a few days, then drop for a few years. I still do not do much journaling. But over the past few months I have come to appreciate, even feel gratitude for my gratitude practice.

There is not much to it. In the evening I write down three good things from the day. They might be simple, like laughing with a friend. Or small, like a moment when the sky looked perfect with bright fall leaves and blue sky. I write them down. I remember those moments.

Then I write down one thing for which I am grateful. This is not a moment or event. It is often a person or people, like a friend, family member, or my students. Sometimes I am thankful for an aspect of my life, like my meditation practice, or even just the fact that I still breathe.

Science seems to corroborate the sense of well-being I feel after writing these things down. A UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Center study in 2008 found that gratitude boosts serotonin and dopamine (those feel good chemicals) in the brain. It also can lower stress levels, increase the desire to exercise, reduce depression, and improve sleep according to a 2009 NIH study. Maybe if I had researched the effects of cultivating gratitude before now I would have started my own practice sooner!

Is a gratitude practice right for you? Try it! Maybe it will light you up. And if it does not, that is okay too. Let it go. Keep trying things until you find the practices that make your soul sing.

What are three good things that happened today? What are you grateful for? Comment on this post, or print out the image below to spend time coloring and writing down what you are thankful for. Let’s share our gratitude and make it grow.

Yoga in the Park

The last couple summers it has been a morning treat to ride my bike to Riverside Park and practice yoga by the river. There are always birds singing and swooping over the river and the fresh air is perfect for settling me into my practice.

I am so excited that this summer I get to teach yoga in the same spot where I enjoyed so many wonderful practices. Join me this month on Saturday mornings for yoga in the park! These classes are appropriate for all levels from beginner to seasoned yogi.

We will meet at Riverside park for an all level yoga class! Pay one price per family. If it is raining class will be held inside at Perrysburg Yoga. Beginners welcome! Bring your own yoga mat. I will only have a small number of mats available for use.

Why I Love Dancer Pose

I don’t know exactly what it is about dancer pose, natarajasana, that just makes me feel good. It’s not that I can do any of the fancier variations of the pose where where the foot would practically touch the head or anything. For my body it’s a decent stretch but nothing that would make me groan with pleasure.

But the way my legs engage, my shoulder pulls back and my heart comes forward feels expansive. The balance gathers up my roving thoughts and focuses them on the present moment. And while I am in this pose I think of joy and sunlight and playfulness.

For me yoga is not about how I look in a pose. It is about how I feel in a pose, the sensations in my body as well as the emotions in my mind.

Try this pose with your free hand on a wall in front of you for more stability and an opportunity for more expansion. Ground your standing leg, lifting your kneecap up. Then take hold of the foot of your bent leg. Press your foot into your hand and hinge forward a little at your hips. Fill your whole body with your breath and feel the expansion through your chest, the stretch in your shoulder, the small motions in your standing food as it works to hold you up. Find some play. It’s not about how long you can hold the pose or how much you life your leg. It’s about being present for that split second of lightness and grace and joy.

Is there a yoga pose that just makes you feel good? I would love to hear what it is!

My favorite pose for relaxation

This pose, reclining bound angle (supta baddha konasana in Sanskrit) is one of my all time favorites for relaxation. When I feel like every fiber in my body is made of stress laying down in this pose does the trick to support me in finding calm. The bolster opens my chest to give my lungs room to breathe more fully. As I lie there I lengthen my exhales longer than my inhales – which promotes a relaxation response in the body. I then take the time I need to breathe, be and reconnect with the center of peace in my body and mind.

You do not have to have a bolster, a couple of pillows work well. And you do not need to be able to put the soles of your feet together. You can cross your legs or lay them out straight. The point is to find comfort with a slight stretch in your body. Allow that comfort to soothe your mind.

Do you have a favorite pose, breath or other technique you use to find your calm?
